Turf technology in Spain is set for player and environmental performance

With all eyes within the global hockey community turning to the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup next month, the Poligras World Cup turf at the Estadi Olímpic de Terrassa in Spain is ready to go. The iconic stadium, which rose to fame as the hockey venue for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (with turfs provided by AstroTurf) is one of two stadia being used for the 2022 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup which is uniquely being played across two countries. The Wagener Stadium in Amsterdam will provide a sister venue to Spain’s Estadi Olímpic de Terrassa and Poligras Platinum GT turfs have been chosen for both.

Poligras Platinum was developed for the Rio Olympics and with its pace and feel has been a hit around the hockey world. The green technology (GT) developed for the Tokyo Olympics has been adapted in to this world class and highly popular turf. Made from 20% sugar cane and manufactured using green energy, these state-of-the-art turfs have been optimised for both player and environmental performance. The hockey community are leaders in sustainability, and Poligras is committed to supporting this by including green technology in every turf.

“Providing the turfs for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup across not just one but two countries has been a massive project for us and one we’re extremely proud to be a part of. With every tournament and Olympics we’re involved with, we pick up new knowledge and expertise and it is fantastic to see Spain and Amsterdam benefitting from the green technology we developed for Tokyo2020. This will be another heartbeat moment for the game and we’re delighted to be partnering with hockey again in what is set to be another great piece of hockey history.”

Poligras World Cup turf put through its paces in action-packed FIH Pro League weekend

The newly installed Poligras Platinum GT turf witnessed a surge of goals in its opening weekend when Spain’s Women hosted China in the FIH Pro League over 4-5 June. This gave the hosts and their opposition a valuable opportunity to play on the very turf that will provide Spain’s World Cup stage from 1-17 July with Spain’s Men hosting South Africa over the same weekend.

The hosts beat South Africa 5-2 and 3-0 in the Men’s fixtures with the first Women’s fixture going to a sudden death shoot out. China clinched the first game 4-3 on penalties before Spain bounced back to win the second clash with an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Speaking to the FIH, Spain’s Maria Lopez recognised the moment:

“It is amazing to play in this stadium because it will be a great venue for the Women’s World Cup”.
